Oct. 30 - Cottonwood 23, Viewmont 7

Story of the game - Nadan Hosea rushed for 201 yards, and
Cottonwood's defense put the clamps on Viewmont, forcing two
second-half turnovers, to lift the Colts to a first-round win in the 5A
playoffs.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings only touchdown came on an
80-yard run by Anthony Tuli late in the second quarter that cut
Cottonwood's lead to 10-7. Viewmont had 96 yards total offense in the
second half, and most of it came on its first drive.

Cottonwood's best moment - This game was closer than the score
indicated. Cottonwood led just 10-7 until QB Crosby Jensen hit
Hudson on a 33-yard scoring pass with four minutes left. Hosea
added another TD in the final minutes. Viewmont's offense never
mounted a serious threat after halftime.

What we learned from this game - Viewmont lost for a couple of
reasons. It could not stop Cottonwood's running game, and its offense
could not consistently move the ball. The defense had to be tired.
Viewmont ended up losing all three of its non-region games, but they
were tough opponents.

Next - Viewmont is done for the season. Cottonwood advances to play
at
Alta in a 5A quarterfinal game.

Oct. 23 - Viewmont 25, Clearfield 12

Story of the game - QB Jeremy Lieber passed for three touchdowns
as Viewmont built a 22-0 lead and hung on to beat Clearfield to earn
the No. 3 seed from Region 1.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings' defense picked up a safety
for the second straight game and led 8-0 at halftime. Lieber's three TD
passes went to three different receivers. It was "senior night" and
Viewmont improved to 2-2 in home games.

Clearfield's best moment - The Falcons rallied in the fourth quarter,
as QB Kolton Young threw a pair of touchdown passes. The loss was
Clearfield's fifth straight.

What we learned from this game - Viewmont earned the third seed,
but can claim that it defeated the Region 1 champion.

Next - Viewmont plays at Cottonwood in the 5A playoffs. Clearfield is
done for the season.

Oct. 16 - Viewmont 27, Roy 6

Story of the game - Anthony Tuli rushed for a season high 137 yards
and scored three touchdowns as Viewmont rallied from an early deficit
to bury Roy and clinch a 5A playoff berth.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings fell behind 6-0, but never let
Roy score again. Tul had scoring runs of 5 and 40 yards, and Austin
Duncan had the first of two field goals to give Viewmont a 17-6 halftime
advantage. Viewmont finished with 268 yards on the ground.

Roy's best moment - The Royals scored first on a 1-yard run by Colton
Scadden. QB Austin Storey completed 17 of 27 passes for 149 yards,
but Roy had just 54 yards rushing and just 2.25 yards per carry.

What we learned from this game - Viewmont was heavily favored, and
did its job. The six points given up was a season best. The Vikings are
now playing for seeding in the 5A playoffs.

Next - Viewmont ends the regular season at home against Clearfield.
Roy plays at Davis.

Oct. 9 - Fremont 30, Viewmont 26

Story of the game - QB Brody Garr passed for 254 yards, but it was
Nick Vigil who hit Tate Lewis on an 11-yard touchdown pass late in the
game that allowed Fremont to upset Viewmont in a Region 1 game.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings trailed 17-7 at halftime, but
this game really turned interesting the fourth period. Dustin Grigg and
Garrett Bushman had a pair of touchdowns, and had no trouble
moving the ball late in the game.

Fremont's best moment - The Silverwolves' big play came on a
halfback pass - Vigil to Lewis. They then held Viewmont in the final
minutes. Braxton Willie had 10 tackles, a pass interception and one of
two blocked extra points.

What we learned from this game - This is a game Viewmont would
like to have back. A win would have put the Vikings on top, but now it's
still going to be a struggle to make the post-season. The schedule,
however, is favorable.

Next - Viewmont plays at Roy. Fremont plays host to Davis.

Sept. 30 - Viewmont 24, Davis 21

Story of the game - Garrett Bushman's 9-yard touchdown run in the
fourth quarter helped negate an earlier fumble and allowed Viewmont
to rally to beat Davis in a big  Region 1 contest.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings led 14-0, but Davis regained
the lead. The big play was a fumbled punt snap that gave Viewmont
the ball at the Davis 29 yard-line with five minutes left.

Davis's best moment - RB Tanner Hinds was the team's sparkplug.
He rushed for 123 yards and caught one pass for 46 yards. QB Gavin
Fowler scored twice, both on short runs that gave Davis a brief lead.

What we learned from this game - Davis botched two punts in this
game, and lost a fumble. Bad weather played a role in this game, and
it may have contributed to the turnovers. The win made Viewmont a
contender in the region standings.

Next - Viewmont plays host to Fremont. Davis is off until Oct. 16, when
it plays Fremont.

Sept. 25 - Bountiful 23, Viewmont 21

Story of the game - QB Tyler Talbot passed for two touchdowns, and
kicker Spencer Mohlman booted a 23-yard field goal late in the game
to lead Bountiful to a narrow non-region win over rival Viewmont.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings got 172 yards rushing, which
is likely a season-high against Bountiful's defense. Jeremy Lieber's
2-yard run gave Viewmont the lead, but the Vikings couldn't hang on.

Bountiful's best moment - After trailing 7-0, the Braves scored the next
three touchdowns, including a 75-yard pass play from Talbot to Ryen
Pope that gave the home team their first lead.

What we learned from this game - This was a tough loss for
Viewmont, but it doesn't matter in the region. Still, it was a rivalry game
and the VIkings third-straight loss to their inner-city rival.

Next - Viewmont goes to Davis in Region 1. Bountiful plays at East.

Sept. 18 - Viewmont 34, Northridge 13

Story of the game - RB Austin Cheney rushed for 176 yards as
Viewmont has its best running attack of the season and belted
Northridge in a Region 1 game.

Viewmont's best moment - This was Viewmont's best defensive effort
of the season, holding Northridge to 109 yards on 52 plays. The
Vikings led 17-7, but really blew the game open on a 93-yard pass
from Jeremy Lieber to Dustin Grigg.

Northridge's best moment - The Knights really didn't have much
offense, but the defense had its moments. Austin Tate had 16 tackles,
while Brock Johnson had 12 tackles and a pass interception.

What we learned from this game - Cheney had two long touchdown
runs - of 35 and 59 yards. The Vikings put forth a dominating effort. The
home crowd had to be impressed.

Next - Viewmont plays at Bountiful in a non-region game. Northridge
plays host to Davis.

Sept. 11 - Viewmont 34, Layton 17

Story of the game - Austin Cheney scored two touchdowns, and
Viewmont rushed for over 250 yards, rallying in the second half to
down Layton in a Region 1 game.

Viewmont's best moment - Layton led 17-13 at halftime, but never
scored again. QB Jeremy Lieber threw a pair of second-half TDs and
RB Anthony Tuli ran 80 yards for a score. Lieber had a nice game, and
Viewmont had no turnovers.

Layton's best moment - All of the Lancers' highlights occurred in the
first half. RB Adam Bunting had a big game, rushing for 175 yards on
29 carries. John Howard had a pair of sacks on defense.

What we learned from this game - This was - by far - Viewmont's best
offensive performance. Viewmont didn't let Layton's home-field
advantage play a role, and may have set itself apart as a second-half
team.

Next - Viewmont returns home to play Northridge. Layton goes to
Davis.

Sept. 4 - Syracuse 28, Viewmont 14

Story of the game - QB Tanner Russell threw four touchdown passes,
and the Titan defense forced six Viewmont turnovers en route to a
decisive Region 1 victory.

Viewmont's best moment - QB Jeremy Lieber threw for 163 yards, but
five interceptions pretty much negated that. RB Garrett Bushman
rushed for 64 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run, and that was
the only time the offense scored. The Vikings' other TD came on Tyler
Worsley's 69-yard fumble return.

Syracuse's best moment - Russell completed 11 of 14 passes for
just 91 yards, but four touchdowns. DB Taylor Russell had three
interceptions for Syracuse, which is likely a school record.

What we learned from this game - The Titans dominated this game,
and handed Viewmont its first Region 1 loss in the Vikings' home
opener. Syracuse is also the defending region champ, so Viewmont
knows what it needs to do to be among the elite.

Next - Viewmont travels to Layton. Syracuse has a big game against
Davis.

Aug. 28 - Viewmont 9, Weber 7

Story of the game -Dustin Grigg caught a 76-yard touchdown pass
from Jeremy Lieber late in the game, and Sam Jensen intercepted a
pass to secure the victory as Viewmont captured its first Region 1
victory.

Viewmont's best moment - Grigg's TD reception came in the third
quarter, and neither team scored after that. Grigg finished with four
catches for 120 yards. The Vikings gave up over 200 yards rushing, but
still allowed only one score. Austin Cheney was one hero, with 12
tackles, including a fumble recovery when Weber was driving.

Weber's best moment -The Warriors' only score came on a 25-yard
pass from Dallin Adams to Bo Thomas. David Daines was the top
runner, with 125 yards on 13 carries. Cody Van Buren had five catches
for 56 yards.

What we learned from this game - Region 1 is famous for its close
games, and there often is little difference between a contender and a
pretender. The Vikings' defense played well to hold on to the win. The
win was coach Brad Lloyd's first as Viewmont's coach.

Next - Viewmont plays its home opener against defending region
champ Syracuse. Weber takes on Davis.

County Clipper was there. To read the Clipper story,

Aug. 21 - Bingham 28, Viewmont 8

Story of the game - QBs Ty Hannay and Stefan Cantwell combined to
pass for two touchdowns passing and two more running, and DB
Braden Anderson broke a school record with three interceptions as
Bingham handled Viewmont in the season opener for both teams.

Viewmont's best moment - The Vikings stayed in the game. DB
Sennett Fraughton returned an interception 28 yards for the Vikings
only score, and they added a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.
The only other bright spot was a 75-yard run by Garrett Bushman in the
fourth quarter.

Bingham's best moment - The Miners' defense didn't give up a point,
limiting Viewmont to just 175 yards total offense and almost half of that
came on one play in the fourth quarter. Once Bingham's offense got
untracked, this game was over.

What we learned from this game - It was a loss, but Viewmont
created some problems for Bingham, which is expected to challenge
for the 5A title. This game might help Viewmont prepare for its region
season.

Next - Viewmont travels to Weber to start Region 1 play. Bingham
plays host to
Alta in what should be a great 5A matchup.
