Feb. 16 - West 64, Murray 36
Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 19 points and center
Gatete Djuma had a good game inside and West buried Murray to
remain undefeated in Region 2 play.
West's highlights: Corbin scored 10 points in the second quarter
as West took an 11-point halftime lead. Junior Vea had a nice
game, too, and helped the Panthers really open their offense after
that. Vea finished with 12 points.
Murray's highlights: Mike Lombardo nailed a three-pointer in the
first period to help the Spartans stay close, but the game got out of
hand shortly afterward. David Collette was the top scorer with 13
points, but nobody else had more than six.
Statistical notes: Julian Moore had six points for Murray. The
Spartans struggled from the free-throw line. Murray's 36-point
output was its lowest of the season. Vea had seven rebounds for
West, making this game his best of the year.
What we learned from this game: West won this game by using
Corbin's talents to drive and create plays, and then Djuma caused
a lot more problems for Collette than in the earlier game.

Feb. 12 - West 68, Hunter 53
Story of the game: Jordan Tanner got hot early, scoring a
season-high 27 points as West blew past Hunter and clinched first
place in Region 2.
West's best moment: Tanner nailed seven three-pointers and
played the key role as the Panthers blew this game open early.
Tyrell Corbin added 11 points. West emptied its bench and nine
players scored.
Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines trailed 62-35 going into the
fourth quarter, but rallied with a convincing effort. Brett Lunceford
topped Hunter with 13 points, while Dimitri Saliba added 11.
Statistical notes: Tanner's big effort bumped his ppg average by
over one point - 12.3. West's 68-point effort was its second-highest
this season. Austin Hernandez had two of Hunter's five
three-pointers. Lunceford had reached double figures in the last
three games.
What we learned from this game: This was one of those "David
vs. Goliath" games and Goliath never gave David a chance. West
has won 16 straight games and now can rest with a No. 1seed.

Feb. 9 - West 54, Skyline 45
Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 16 points and Gatete
Djuma had 15 as West held Skyline scoreless in the last four
minutes and held off the Eagles in a matchup of Region 2 leaders.
West's best moment: The Panthers finally broke free late in the
game, and hit 11-15 free throws. Djuma was a force rebounding
with 14 caroms and West dominated that department. Tana Afeaki
and Jordan Tanner had eight points each.
Skyline's best moment: The Eagles rode the shooting of Jaden
Jackson to lead the entire first half. The game was close until the
end. Jackson finished with 21 points. Mike Staes added eight.
Statistical notes: West won its 15th straight game, and swept the
season series. Jackson finished with five three-pointers for Skyline.
What we learned from this game: West has clinched a tie for the
Region 2 title, and just needs one more win (or a Murray loss) to
grab the top seed.

Djuma had another huge game, with 14 points and 20 rebounds,
as West rallied in the fourth quarter to edge Granger in a Region 2
game.

fourth quarter, but pulled away at the end. Djuma was a monster
inside for the second straight game, and seems to be learning
quickly.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers played well, and got a
season-high 21 points from Isaiah Tademy. Granger put up nine
three-pointers. Deng Deng added 10 points. Austin Scott and Deng
had five steals each.
Statistical notes: West made 15-19 free throws, while Granger
was 1-2. Tana Afeaki had five steals for West.
What we learned from this game: These teams match up well, but
Djuma was the big difference. If he continues to improve, he could
be tough to defend for state tournament opponents.

the Deseret News brief, click here. There was no report in the Salt
Lake Tribune.

that. Colton Squire had a season high 12 points. Marquis Newman
had eight points and eight assists.
Statistical notes: This game was decided in the second and third
quarters, and West dominated. Both teams shot poorly from the
free-throw line.
What we learned from this game: West played well and got a
good game from Djuma. The Panthers are on a roll and moving
closer to a No. 1 seed.

Jan. 29 - West 53, Cottonwood 41
Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 20 points as West built a
big lead and then held off Cottonwood to stay unbeaten in Region 2.
West's best moment: The Panthers' trapping defense, and the
inside play of Gatete Djuma created problems for Cottonwood.
After the Colts closed to within three points, West ended the game
on a 9-0 run. Djuma had nine points and Tana Afeaki eight.
Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts trailed by 19 points at one
point, but cut the margin to 14 by halftime and then a 14-2 run late
in the game got Cottonwood within 44-41. Arlen Smith was the top
scorer with 12 points.
Statistical notes: Ray Chavez, who averaged 10.2 ppg last year,
hasn't scored in double figures in 10 games. West's Cheney
Doane has shown more consistency. West shot 19-30 from the
free-throw line Cottonwood was just 5-12.
What we learned from this game: West secured first place. The
Panthers have a two-game lead at the region's halfway point.

Jan. 22 - West 53, Murray 39
Story of the game: Tyrell Corbin scored 22 points as West rallied
with a huge second half to beat Murray and stay unbeaten in
Region 2.
West's best moment: The Panthers got their offense going in the
second half and dominated play. West outscored Murray 35-16 and
won going away. Jordan Tanner backed up Corbin with 10 points.
Murray's best moment: David Collette scored eight of his
team-high 15 points in the first quarter as Murray took a quick lead
and still held a 23-18 advantage at intermission.
Statistical notes: Murray held West to just three points in the
second quarter. Then the Spartans only scored five in the third
period. Both teams shot just over 50 percent from the free-throw
line. Cheney Doane and Tanner had two treys for West.
What we learned from this game: West is playing good basketball
and has now won 11 straight games. The Panthers just need to be
careful that they are not peaking too soon.

Jan. 15 - West 33, Skyline 31
Story of the game - Misitana Afeaki rebounded a missed shot and
raced the length of the court to score the winning basket as West
edged Skyline in a key Region 2 game.
West's best moment - Afeaki can say he made a difference as
West avoided the upset. The Panthers led the entire game,
dominating with defense. Tyrell Corbin was the top scorer with 16
points.
Skyline's best moment - The Eagles started slowly. They scored
just six points in the first half and trailed 24-12 going into the final
period. Jaden Jackson led a big fourth-quarter rally, and he and
Chase Dunford nailed three-pointers, but lost in the last seconds.
Statistical notes - West C Gatete Djuma returned from
suspension and scored nine points. West made 11-13 free throws,
while Skyline shot 8-13. Skyline had five three-pointer. West had
none.

Panthers let Skyline have a chance to win this game, but came out
ahead in the end. West has now won nine straight.

West relied on Corbin more, but Afeaki and Jordan Tanner (10
points) also helped out. West outscored Granger 17-9 in the final
quarter.
Granger's best moment: The Lancers got balanced scoring from
Deng Deng (14 points), Austin Scott (13) and Cody Thorup (12) and
only trailed West by one point entering the final quarter.
Statistical notes: West had seven three-pointers, while Granger
had five. West shot 16-27 from the free-throw line. Granger was
3-6. Isaiah Tademy had nine points.
What we learned from this game: The Panthers won both games
without Djuma, and captured their ninth straight win.

Jan. 8 - West 55, Cyprus 51
Story of the game - Tyrell Corbin scored 17 points, and made his
free throws in the overtime session, as West survived a scare from
Cyprus in both team's Region 2 opener.
West's best moment - The Panthers took an 18-4 lead in the first
period. West outscored Cyprus 9-5 in the overtime. Thomas
Bullock backed up Corbin with a career-high 12 points.

Cyprus made 10-14 free throws, while West was just 11-22.
What we learned from this game - West won its seventh straight
game, but it wasn't easy. The Panthers still have to prove
themselves because their non-region schedule isn't viewed as
being too difficult.

Jan. 5 - West 60, Highland 51
Story of the game - Tyrell Corbin scored 29 points as West held off
Highland in a non-region game that was highlighted by a
late-game brawl.

and held a 38-24 lead going into the final period. Jordan Tanner
added 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Highland's best moment - The Rams rallied in the final period,
scoring more than half of their points in that eight-minute span.
Sam Orchard and Nate Fakahafua had 15 points, while Lew Evans
had a season-high 13.

as well as West's Gatete Djuma were suspended for two games
for the fight, which started when Djuma grabbed a rebound and
swung his elbows, which hit Fakahafua. West made 19-24 free
throws, while Highland was 10-14. Both teams made five
three-pointers.
What we learned from this game - This was a decisive win by the
Panthers, but it will be remembered for the brawl. Corbin was able
to drive and score, and had one of his best games of the season,
but the Panthers will have to play without Djuma for a while.

Dec. 22 - West 67, East 48
Story of the game - Tyrell Corbin scored 29 points and new center
Gatete Djuma played a big role as West blew out East in a
non-region game between Salt Lake City rivals.
West's best moment - The game was tied after the first quarter,
but West outscored East 26-9 in the second period, and that was
the difference. The 6-foot-10 Djuma created matchup problems
inside, and that helped Corbin and Jordan Tanner (16 points) on
the perimeter.
East's best moment - The Leopards played pretty evenly with
West, except for that second-quarter stretch. East had to change its
game plan, though, and that didn't help. Jack Larson led with 10
points and Parker Van Dyke had eight.
Statistical notes - Corbin hit a pair of three-pointers and bumped
his average to 21.5 ppg. At this rate, he could be among West's
career high scorers. West scored 26 points in the second quarter,
but was held to just seven points in the third. Ten players scored
for East.
What we learned from this game - West had a decided advantage
over its rivals even before Djuma joined the team. With him, West
may have become the favorite to win Region 2.

Corbin. West trailed 35-25 entering the final period. Tana Afeaki
had nine points for the Panthers, who won their sixth straight game.
Woods Cross's best moment: The Wildcats led most of the game,

Tanner had 22 as West pulled away in the third quarter and
bounced Salem Hills in a non-region contest.
West's best moment - The Panthers led 32-27 at halftime, but
outscored Salem Hills 20-10 in the third period to take a 15-point

Salem Hills, which fell to 3-4 on the season. London Simonson
added 11 points and Joseph Mohrmann had 10.
Statistical notes - Salem Hills was a lot better from the free throw
line. It shot 9-11, compared to 15-31 for West. The Panthers added
a new player - 6-foot-10 Gatete Djuma - and he had six points.
What we learned from this game - West improved to 4-2 overall
and had a season high in points (70). Tanner's 22 points was a
season high.

Dec. 11 - West 63, Clearfield 57
Story of the game - Tyrell Corbin had a career-high 32 points as
West's offense scored a season high point total, but it was barely
enough to hold off Clearfield.
West's best moment - Corbin's points came mostly on driving
shots. Jordan Tanner was the team's outside threat with 18 points,
including four three-pointers. West hit 16-29 free throws, though,
and that almost cost it the game.
Clearfield's best moment - Trailing 35-21 at halftime, the Falcons
made a nice rally, especially in the fourth quarter, where they
outscored West 24-17. Chris Brower had 16 points and Kolton
Young 15.
Statistical notes - West had five three-pointers; Clearfield had just
one. Only one West player (Thomas Bullock) had more than two
points for the Panthers.
What we learned from this game - West won a close game, and
earned its first road win. Simply, Corbin put the team on his back
and the Panthers moved to 3-2 overall.

Dec. 9 - West 57, Stansbury 29
Story of the game - Jordan Tanner scored 16 points, including four
three-pointers, as West blew the game open in the third quarter
and claimed the easy non-region victory.
West's best moment - The Panthers led the entire game. It was
27-18 at halftime, but they outscored Stansbury 16-5 in the third
period to turn the game into a rout. Tyrell Corbin had nine points
and three others had eight each.
Stansbury's best moment -The Stallions never led, and the
outcome of this game wasn't in doubt. Ty Barton led with seven
points. Reggie Roberts and Taylor Hunt had Stansbury's only
threes.
Statistical notes - West had eight treys. Cheney Doane, Junior Vea
and Thomas Bullock had eights points each. Stansbury's 29 points
was a season low.
What we learned from this game - The Panthers were in
command the whole game, and improved their record to 2-2.
Corbin was the focus of Stansbury's defense, but others stepped
up.

Dec. 8 - Morgan 62, West 51
Story of the game - Braden Saunders scored 21 points and Casey
Evans had 18 as Morgan dominated the fourth quarter and
shocked West in a non-region game.
West's best moment - The Panthers got a career-high 25 points
from Tyrell Corbin and led 42-38 entering the final period. Junior
Vea added nine points.
Morgan's best moment - This was a great win for the Trojans, who
outscored West 24-9 in the fourth quarter and won going away.
Kaleb Christensen added 10 points for Morgan.
Statistical notes - Morgan hit 20-26 free throws, including several
in the final quarter. West was 11-18. West had six three-pointers;
Morgan had four. Corbin had just one trey. Since he's the team's
ballhandler, it brings about this thought: can he shoot the three?
What we learned from this game - This win could define Morgan's
season. West, meanwhile, fell to 1-2 overall and the defending 4A
champions have to be wondering about itself.

Dec. 3 - West 55, Dixie 31
Story of the game - Tyrell Corbin scored 19 points and Jordan
Tanner had 15 as West blew past Dixie to earn its first win this
season.
West's best moment - Corbin hit a three-pointer, and was fouled,
late in the first quarter that allowed the Panthers to tie the game. It
was all West after that. West held Dixie to 19 points over the last
three quarters.
Dixie's best moment - This was Dixie's opener, and the Rebels
has problems on offense. Mike Sharp was the leading scorer with
eight points.
Statistical notes - Tanner had a pair of three-pointers, and West
had six overall. Dixie was 7-16 from the free-throw line; West was
13-18.
What we learned from this game - The Panthers' guard play was

factor in all of West's games.

Nov. 24 - West Jordan 73, West 48
Story of the game - Jesse Herrin scored 18 points, including five
three-pointers, but was West Jordan's inside game that made the
difference in the Jaguars' impressive season-opening win.
West's best moment - Since West was dominated inside, the
Panthers' Tyrell Corbin and Jordan Tanner had to play a big role
outside, and they finished with 15 and 14 points. West had a nice
run in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars led the entire game.
Jordan Loveridge had 14 points and several blocked shots, while
Jaxon Knighton had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Statistical notes - Tanner, Corbin and Tana Afeaki combined for
nine three-pointers for West. West Jordan put the game away with
a 13-3 run early in the third quarter.
What we learned from this game - These teams won the 5A and
4A state titles last year, but they are entirely different clubs this
season. It should be a wake up call for the Panthers.
