WEST JORDAN FOOTBALL - 2009
|

Oct. 30 - Lone Peak 27, West Jordan 6
Story of the game - Lone Peak QB Tannon Pederson threw three
touchdown passes, all in the first half, and the Knights' defense
intercepted six West Jordan passes to claim the 5A playoff victory.
West Jordan's best moment - Jaguars' QB Adam Boelter had one of
his worst nights of the season, but he was able to escape the
shutout with an 8-yard TD pass to C.J. O'Neal with less than a minute
left in the game.
Lone Peak's best moment - After an interception, Lone Peak scored
first on a 75-yard pass from Pederson to Ryan Savage. Pederson
later connected with Eric Pollard on a 58-yard play. The defense
prevented Lone Peak from getting worried.
What we learned from this game - The Jaguars offense kept Lone
Peak busy, but too many turnovers prevented West Jordan from
pulling off the upset.
Next - West Jordan is done for the season. Lone Peak advanced to
play at Davis in a 5A quarterfinal.

game, and the Herald sent a photographer. To read the D-News

Oct. 22 - West Jordan 50, Kearns 14
Story of the game - QB Adam Boelter threw for 281 yards, and WR
C.J. O'Neal set the state record for most receptions in a season as
West Jordan pounded Kearns and earned a spot in the 5A state
playoffs.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars were on fire early,
scoring on their first five possessions. The defense also did its job,
holding Kearns scoreless in the first half. At one point, West Jordan
led 44-0.
Kearns' best moment - The Cougars rallied in the second, but it was
too little, too late. Keanu Solovi had a short TD run and QB J.R. Finai
connected with Shannon Graham on a 57-yard scoring pass.
What we learned from this game - West Jordan made the
post-season. While the road won't be easy, the Jaguars' offense has
to scare its first-round opponent. The defense is what will decide
their fate.
Next - Kearns is done for the season. West Jordan's opponent is
TBA.

the Deseret News sent a photographer. To read the D-News game

Oct. 14 - West Jordan 67, Payson 34
Story of the game - QB Adam Boelter came back from injury to throw
for seven touchdowns, and ran for three more, as West Jordan
regained its momentum and blitzed Payson in a non-region game.
West Jordan's best moment - Boelter's resurrection was noted early
as he scored his three rushing TDs in the first quarter. After that, it
was just a matter of outscoring Payson. West Jordan had 60 points
by the end of the third quarter. Boelter's 523 yards was second-best
in Utah prep history.
Payson's best moment - While the Lions couldn't stop West Jordan,
their offense fared well. QB Colton Cannon passed for three scores,
and WR Brady Loveless scored three times.
What we learned from this game - Boelter makes a difference with
West Jordan's offense, and the Jags have a chance to make the 5A
playoffs with him at the helm. C.J. O'Neal had a big game with 11
receptions, and could break a state record.
Next - West Jordan plays host to Kearns. Payson takes on Uintah.

Oct. 9 - Bingham 41, West Jordan 7
Story of the game - Harvey Langi rushed for 127 yards and scored
three touchdowns and Manoa Pikula returned an interception 52
yards for a score as Bingham blasted West Jordan to win its 28th
straight region game.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars had trouble moving the
football against Bingham. But QB Michael Moorehead got loose on a
65-yard run in the fourth quarter and that set up Moorehead's 18-yard
touchdown pass to Deshawn Perkins.
Bingham's best moment - The Miners started early, scoring on their
first three drives. Langi had touchdown runs of 12 and 22 yards, and
then QB Ty Hannay hit Braden Anderson on a 20-yard touchdown
pass. The Miners then hit West Jordan again in the third quarter to
put the game away.
What we learned from this game - This was never a winnable
game, but Moorehead gained good experience, which will help in the
years to come. This sets up a game against Kearns Oct. 22 that will
decide if West Jordan earns a playoff berth.
Next - West Jordan plays at Payson in a non-region game. Bingham
plays host to Riverton.

Sept. 30 - West Jordan 35, Taylorsville 13
Story of the game - Freshman Michael Moorehead emerged as
West Jordan's starting quarterback and accounted for 250 yards total
offense as the Jaguars downed Taylorsville in a Region 3 contest.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jags ran the ball more than
usual, and rushed for 235 yards. Moorehead had a decent game
throwing the ball. It's best that his first game was against Taylorsville.
Taylorsville's best moment - The Warriors' defense played well in
the first quarter, but the offense had trouble putting together drives. K
Jared Stenberg had two first-half field goals. The Warriors scored
their TD in the fourth quarter on a 65-yard pass from Ryan Stone to
Nate Speth.
What we learned from this game - West Jordan's running game,
and overall defense played big roles in this game. The Jaguars'
offense revolves around the QB. Fortunately, they have more than a
week of practice before going up against Bingham.
Next -West Jordan takes on Bingham. Taylorsville plays at Riverton.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Sept. 24 - Riverton 14, West Jordan 6
Story of the game - Jordan Zymola and Tua Laei scored
touchdowns, but the real story was Riverton's defense, which forced
five turnovers and allowed the Silverwolves to earn the Region 3 win.
West Jordan's best moment - QB Adam Boelter was off. Later, West
Jordan coaches realized he suffered a concussion and that resulted
in several "misreads." Boelter did hit Deshawn Perkins on a 14-yard
TD pass late in the game.
Riverton's best moment - The Silverwolves went up 14-0 on an
8-minute drive in the fourth quarter, which finally gave them some
breathing room. West Jordan didn't score until late in the game. This
might have been the defense's finest outing of the season.
What we learned from this game - This was a tough loss for West
Jordan, and it became a bigger loss when Boelter was found to have
a concussion and sidelined for two weeks.
Next - West Jordan goes to Taylorsville. Riverton plays host to Alta.

game. To read the D-News story, click here. There was no report in
the Salt Lake Tribune To see the D-News photo gallery, click here.
Sept. 18 - Pleasant Grove 43, West Jordan 14
Story of the game - QB Dallas Lloyd had his best game of the
season, throwing four touchdown passes, and RB Jeff Harris rushed
for 101 yards as Pleasant Grove built a big lead and whipped West
Jordan in a non-region game.
West Jordan's best moment - Jaguars QB Adam Boelter threw for
315 yards, but was intercepted twice. Andrew Gardner and C.J.
O'Neal scored TDs for West Jordan, but the running game averaged
just two yards per carry.
PG's best moment - Lloyd had three TD throws before halftime as
Pleasant Grove built a 33-7 advantage. Lloyd completed 11 of 18
passes for 266 yards as the Vikings had 500 yards total offense.
What we learned from this game - This was the first time West
Jordan's offense has been shut down. The Vikings dominated the
line of scrimmage. Boelter had a decent game, but he can't do it all
by himself.
Next - West Jordan plays host to Riverton. Pleasant Grove goes to
American Fork.

Sept. 11 - West Jordan 55, Copper Hills 6
Story of the game - QB Adam Boelter passed for six touchdowns
and ran for two more as West Jordan built a 41-0 halftime lead and
continued its mastery over rival Copper Hills in this Region 3 opener.
West Jordan's' best moment - This game was over early. It was
22-0 after one quarter as Boelter threw TD passes to C.J. O'Neal
(twice) and Deshawn Perkins. Most everybody got a chance to play
and the second half went quickly thanks to the "mercy rule."
Copper Hills' best moment - There weren't many. The Grizzlies had
hoped to play West Jordan a lot tougher. Copper Hills didn't score
until the last play of the game on a 1-yard pass from Casey Spell to
Matt Demass.
What we learned from this game - This was an impressive win,
partly because Copper Hills had been looking forward to this game
and simply couldn't compete. West Jordan's offense is the
highest-scoring team in the state at this time.
Next - West Jordan goes to Pleasant Grove. Copper Hills travels to
Riverton.

Deseret News brief, click here. To view the Salt Lake Tribune box

Sept. 4 - West Jordan 46, Provo 28
Story of the game - Adam Boelter passed for 330 yards and ran for
146 more as West Jordan rallied in the second half to beat Provo in a
battle of unbeaten teams.
West Jordan's best moment - The running game helped West
Jordan establish the pass and Boelter was able to connect with WRs
Deshawn Perkins and C.J. O'Neal six times each. The Jags' defense
also stopped Provo in the second half. Junior LaPale intercepted a
pass and returned it for a score.
Provo's best moment - The Bulldogs actually led 28-19 at halftime,
thanks to the talents of Maka and Keoki Unufe. Maka and Keoki each
caught touchdown passes from QB Matt Griner. Maka also returned a
kickoff for a touchdown. He had to leave the game in the second half,
due to cramps, and Provo couldn't recover.
What we learned from this game - This was a battle between two
good offenses and West Jordan won by playing a full 48 minutes.
The coaches must have told the defense something useful at
halftime because it worked.
Next - West Jordan starts Region 3 action at Copper Hills. Provo
opens Region 7 play at Westlake.

game. To read the D-News story, click here. To read the Herald's

Aug. 28 - West Jordan 42, East 14
Story of the game - Adam Boelter passed for 230 yards and two
touchdowns, and the West Jordan defense forced four turnovers, and
rallied for a convincing non-region win over East.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars settled down after
handing East the early lead. Boelter led two scoring drives, then Cody
Byrd picked up a blocked field goal and raced 65 yards for the
go-ahead touchdown. Later, the Jags stopped East twice inside the
10-yard line.
East's best moment -The Leopards jumped ahead early. Daniel
Tuuhetaufa returned the opening kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown
and then QB Tanner Curtis tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Nick
Sessions. It was 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
What we learned from this game - West Jordan moved the ball well
again on offense. The Jags are certainly leery of their preseason
schedule because they had success last year, too. But this year's
could team looks impressive so far.
Next - West Jordan travels to Provo. East has a road game at
Mountain Crest.

Aug. 21 - West Jordan 40, Granger 23
Story of the game - QB Adam Boelter rushed for four touchdowns
and Andrew Gardner returned an interception for a score as West
Jordan ran up to a big lead and held off Granger in each team's
non-region opener.
West Jordan's best moment - The Jaguars dominated most of the
game and Boelter had a great game in his first start. He was 17-26
passing for 209 yards. The only questionable part of this game was
the Jags' kicking game.
Granger's best moment - The Lancers trailed 40-7 entering the final
quarter, but made a determined effort to make the score closer.
Sterling Platts ran for a touchdown, and then added the two-point
conversion. Taylor Pili then returned a fumble five yards for a score.
What we learned from this game - The Jags' new spread offense
seemed to work well as they were able to move the football on
Granger. This was a good confidence-builder for the team.
Next - West Jordan travels to East. Granger has a home game
against Hug High of Reno, Nev.
