WEST JORDAN BOYS BASKETBALL: 5A state champs
March 7 - West Jordan 63, Lone Peak 52

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 22
points and Jordan Weirick and Mason Sawyer
played huge roles, with 15 points apiece, as
West Jordan rallied to beat Lone Peak and win
the 5A state championship.

West Jordan's key moment: The Jags trailed
most of the first half, but came back in the third
quarter. Gallegos keyed the rally with two straight
three-pointers. The game was tied with 4:33 left
when Gallegos hit another trey, and then Sawyer scored five straight
points.

Lone Peak's key moment: The first half was played at a fast pace
and very entertaining. Tyler Haws scored 14 of his 20 points as the
Knights actually built an 11-point lead. It was 32-26 at halftime. Nate
Austin also had a big night with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Statistical notes: Haws finished 8-23 from the field. Weirick was
named the tournament's MVP. Both teams made six three-pointers.
West Jordan outscored Lone Peak 22-11 in the final quarter.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan won its first state
basketball title since 2001 and dedicated it to former teammate Joe
Montgomery, who graduated last year. He died March 6.

Next: The championship game ends the season for both teams.

March 6 - West Jordan 51, Davis 41

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 23 points, including 16
in the first half, as West Jordan bounced Davis and advanced to the
5A state championship game.

West Jordan's key moment: The Jaguars led most of the game,
thanks to the unstoppable Weirick. His biggest play came in the
second quarter when, after a Davis timeout, he picked off a pass
and sent the West Jordan fans into a frenzy with a dunk. Mason
Sawyer added 11 points.

Davis' key moment: The Darts played tough, but chose to guard
Reyes Gallegos closely, and that helped Weirick. James Cowser
led Davis with 10 points, but the Darts also shot well from the
perimeter, nailing five three-pointers.

Statistical notes: Weirick made 9-16 shots and also had seven
rebounds. Gallegos was held to seven points, but made an impact.
West Jordan led 31-22 at halftime. West Jordan shot 51 percent
from the field; Davis shot 34 percent.

What we learned from this game: The Jags are peaking at the
right time. They've won 20 games this season, including their last
eight straight.

Next: West Jordan adanced to play powerful Lone Peak in the 5A
title game March 7. Davis finished the season 19-5.

March 4 - West Jordan 47, Lehi 37

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 16 points and Mason
Sawyer had 15 as West Jordan edged Lehi in the quarterfinals of
the 5A state tournament.

West Jordan's key moment: Gallegos led the Jags on a 12-2 run
midway through the second quarter that gave them a 28-21 lead.
After that, Sawyer saw the ball most, and he hit a key basket and
two free throws that stopped a Lehi rally. Jordan Weirick added
12 points.

Lehi's key moment: The Pioneers lost guard Jacob Obioma to an
ankle injury in the third quarter, and that hurt their chances. Will
Walker had 10 points and six rebounds. Josh Scott had seven
points and 10 rebounds.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 12-17 from the free-throw line;
Lehi was just 2-4. Lehi's 37 points was a season low. Obioma
finished with seven points.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan won a tough battle
and joined Region 3 rival
Bingham in the semifinals.

Next: West Jordan will play Davis March 6 in one 5A semifinal
game.
Lehi finished the season 15-8.

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 15 points and Mason
Sawyer had 14 as the Jaguars built a 19-point first-half lead and
downed Viewmont in the opening round of the 5A state tournament.

West Jordan's key moment: The Jags went on a 13-2 run in the
first quarter and were never threatened. West Jordan shot 59
percent and the defense held Viewmont to 36 percent shooting.
Reyes Gallegos shadowed Viewmont's top scorer and held him to
two points.

Viewmont's key moment: There weren't too many highlights for the
Vikings in this game, except perhaps it built experience for next
year. Kyle DeHart, Spencer Jensen and Blake Wilkinson had eight
points each for Viewmont.

Statistical notes: West Jordan had six three-pointers, led by
Weirick with three. Only 13 free throws were attempted the entire
game. The Jaguars led 32-20 at halftime.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan looked good and
joined Bingham and Riverton as winners from Region 3 in the
opening round.

Next: West Jordan advanced to play Lehi on March 4. Viewmont
finished the season with a 10-12 record.

Feb. 24 - West Jordan 78, Kearns 42

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 20 points as West
Jordan jumped to a big lead early and ended Kearns' hopes of
earning a Region 3 win this season.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 22-4 after the first
quarter, and was able to substitute freely. West Jordan finished tied
for first place in the region. Jordan Weirick added 12 points and
freshman Jordan Loveridge had 10.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars were never in this game, but
they competed better after the opening quarter. Of all the region
teams, it appears Kearns had the most trouble with West Jordan,
losing by 30+ points each time. Fatu Moala led with 13 points.

Statistical notes: Gallegos had a pair of three-pointers for West
Jordan, and appears as a favorite to win Region 3's MVP. Kearns
had four treys from different players.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan will earn a trophy
for tying for first place in the region. However, the Jaguars won the
coin flip and advanced to the 5A state tourney as a No. 1 seed.

Next: West Jordan will play Viewmont in the opening round of the
5A tourney March 2.
Kearns is done for the season.

Feb. 20 - West Jordan 79, Bingham 65

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos had a career high 31 points as
West Jordan jumped on Bingham from the start and cruised to a
Region 3 victory that tied these two teams for first place.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars used the scoring of
Gallegos, Jordan Weirick and Mason Sawyer to take an 18-9 lead
after the first quarter. They extended it to 36-17 at halftime, and
withstood Bingham's rally attempts. Weirick finished with 16 points
and Sawyer had 15.

Bingham's best moment: Ben Clifford and Remington Peck had 19
points apiece as Bingham scored 48 of its 65 points in the second
half. Still, the Miners made up very little ground.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 20-21 from the free-throw line
and won at Bingham for the second straight year. Both teams had
seven three-pointers, led by Gallegos with five.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan moved back into a
tie for first place with the win. The No. 1 seed in the 5A state
tournament will likely be determined by a coin flip.

Next: West Jordan ends the regular season at Kearns Feb. 24.
Bingham plays host to Hunter the same night.

Feb. 13 - West Jordan 59, Riverton 55

Story of the game: Mason Sawyer scored 16 points and West
Jordan hit its free throws late in the game to hold off Riverton and
move into second place in the Region 3 standings.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 23-20 at
halftime, but outscored Riverton 22-13 in the third period to pull
ahead. Jordan Weirick had 15 points and Reyes Gallegos 13.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves took a 10-4 first-quarter
lead, but couldn't hold it. They hit seven three-point baskets in the
game. Sean Neilsen had 19 points for Riverton, while Scott Friel
added 16.

Statistical notes: Both teams shot well from the free-throw line;
West Jordan was 11-12, and Riverton 14-17. The teams split their
season series, but right now Riverton holds the tiebreaker because
it has beaten Bingham.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan is now in sole
possession of second place and its game Feb. 20 at Bingham will
be the big game in the region that night.

Next: West Jordan goes to Bingham on Feb. 20. Riverton goes to
Kearns the same night.

Feb. 10 - West Jordan 68, Copper Hills 50

Gallegos had 19 as West Jordan broke loose in the fourth quarter
and beat Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.

quarter, but outscored Copper Hills 24-10 in the final period. Tyson
Holt and Mason Sawyer added 10 points apiece.

biggest offensive threat. He had 18 points, including four three-
pointers. Nobody else was in double figures.

Statistical notes: The Grizzlies shot just eight free throws. There
were 11 three-pointers in the game.

What we learned from this game: The Jaguars won the games
they needed to win. Now, they have two battles that will decide
where they finish in the region.

Next: West Jordan plays host to Riverton Feb. 13. Copper Hills has
Bingham at home the same night.

Feb. 6 - West Jordan 81, Hunter 67

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 28 points as West
Jordan outshot Hunter and downed the Wolverines a Region 3
contest that moved the Jaguars back into a tie for second place.

West Jordan's best moment: West Jordan led 40-36 at halftime
between these two offensive juggernauts, but came out in the third
period and took a commanding advantage. Gallegos had a lot of
help as Mason Sawyer had 15 points, Jordan Weirick 14 and Tyson
Udy 11.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines have been turning up their
scoring potential lately. They stayed right with West Jordan and
always threatened to rally. Jeff Poole led four players in double
figures with 22 points.

Statistical notes: A.J. Pataialii had 14 points for Hunter, while Majik
Givens had 13 and Kevin Williams 12. Both teams shot well from
the free-throw line; West Jordan was 19-22 and Hunter perfect at 13-
13. West Jordan's 81 points was a season high.

What we learned from this game: Gallegos has learned to put the
team on his shoulders. If he's successful, they usually win. It's also
important for him to get help. The Jags can still win the region as
they have Riverton and Bingham on the schedule.

Next: West Jordan plays host to Copper Hills on Feb. 10. Hunter
goes to
Riverton the same night.

Jan. 30 - Bingham 76, West Jordan 55

Story of the game: Blake Krahenbuhl scored 18 points and
Bingham bombed away from the perimeter, making a season-high
12 three-point shots, to bury rival West Jordan in a key Region 3
contest.

West Jordan's best moment: Reyes Gallegos matched Bingham's
shooting, with 23 points on five three-pointers. Actually, the Jags
more than matched Bingham on the perimeter, but couldn't match
them inside when that part of the Miners' offense opened.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners got hot early, and stayed hot.
They led 37-23 at halftime, and never gave in. The outside shooting
also opened the inside and Remington Peck added 16 points and
Ben Clifford had 12.

Statistical notes: West Jordan had eight treys. Bingham's biggest
lead was 22 points. The Jaguars are 3-3 in their last six games.
Mason Sawyer added 13 points for West Jordan. Jordan Weirick
had nine.

What we learned from this game: This was obviously one of the
most disappointing defeats for the Jaguars, who may be wondering
if they belong among the 5A elite. The next few games will tell.

Next: West Jordan goes to Hunter on Jan. 30. Bingham plays host
to
Riverton the same night.

Jan. 23 - Riverton 51, West Jordan 41

Story of the game: Sean Neilson scored 19 points, and Riverton's
defense put the clamps on West Jordan guard Reyes Gallegos,
and that made the difference in the Silverwolves' Region 3 victory.

West Jordan's best moment: This was the battle for first place and
West Jordan's other guards, Mason Sawyer and Jordan Weirick,
came through. The Jags made several runs, but couldn't take the
lead in this playoff-type atmosphere game.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves' top scorers, Scott Friel,
and Ryan Thomas, couldn't score either. Garrett Gundestrup
backed up Neilson with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Riverton led most of the game and never gave it up, despite a bad
night at the free-throw line.

Statistical notes: Riverton was 7-18 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 5-12. These teams are usually good at fundamentals.
How does that happen? Neilson's 19 points was a career high.

What we learned from this game: Defense wins championships,
and Riverton had the best on this night. The Jags' 41 points was a
season low.

Next: West Jordan returns home to take on Kearns on Jan. 27.
Riverton travels to Copper Hills.

Jan. 20 - West Jordan 51, Copper Hills 47

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 19 points and led a
huge fourth-quarter rally as West Jordan avoided an upset and
edged Copper Hills in a Region 3 game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed the entire game,
and had a 35-28 deficit to make up in the final quarter, but they
outscored Copper Hills 23-12 to do it. Tyson Holt added 12 points.

Copper Hills' best moment:   The Grizzlies got their home crowd
into the game early by outscoring West Jordan 13-4 in the first
quarter. This was their chance to show they belong in the upper
echelon of the region, but it didn't pan out. Preston Stelter had 17
points.

Statistical notes: Stelter had five three-pointers for Copper Hills.
West Jordan was 14-24 from the free-throw line; Copper Hills was
8-13.

What we learned from this game: The Jags avoided an upset and
stayed unbeaten in region play. Maybe they were looking forward to
playing Riverton next?

Next: West Jordan travels to Riverton Jan. 23. Copper Hills goes to
Bingham the same night.

Jan. 16 - West Jordan 67, Hunter 43

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 19 points - all in the first
half - as West Jordan built a big lead and roared to an easy win in
each team's Region 3 opener.

West Jordan's best moment: Coming off a loss to Jordan, the
Jaguars didn't give Hunter a chance. They scored 26 points in the
first quarter and led 41-19 at halftime.

Hunter's best moment: The Lancers stayed with West Jordan in
the second half, when the game was already decided. A.J. Patailii
led Hunter with 15 points, while Jeff Poole had 14.

Statistical notes: Gallegos had five three-pointers for the Jags.
Poole had a pair of Hunter. West Jordan hit 13-24 free throws;
Hunter was 3-6. In Hunter's last two games, its offense has scored
season lows.

What we learned from this game: The Jags are back on the
winning track and won this game by taking Hunter out of its game
plan.

Next:  West Jordan plays at Copper Hills on Jan. 20. Hunter takes
on
Riverton at home the same night.

Jan. 9 - Jordan 54, West Jordan 52

Story of the game: Colton Burgon scored 13 points and Kevin
Goldsmith hit the deciding free throws late in the game to lift Jordan
to its fourth straight win - over rival West Jordan - in a non-region
game.

West Jordan's best moment: This game was played in a playoff-
type atmosphere, so that's good for the Jaguars in the long run.
Mason Sawyer and Jordan Weirick had 14 points apiece.

Jordan's best moment: The Beetdiggers trailed early, but rallied in
the third quarter to narrow the gap. The fourth quarter had the most
scoring, but also the most defense. It was played at a frantic pace
with the home crowd as loud as it's been this season.

Statistical notes: D.J. Tialavea had a chance to tie the game late,
but missed two free throws. He wasn't alone. West Jordan hit just 8-
19 in the game. Goldsmith and Jordan Bernardo had 10 points for
Jordan.

What we learned from this game: Jordan fans made this game
one of the best of the season by dressing in white. The "white out"
certainly played a role in the Diggers' win.

Next:  West Jordan opens Region 3 play by playing host to Hunter
on Jan. 16.
Jordan takes on Hillcrest at home the same night.

Jan. 6 - West Jordan 71, Taylorsville 36

Story of the game: Mason Sawyer scored 18 points and Jordan
Weirick had 16 as West Jordan blew out Taylorsville from the start
and rolled to the surprisingly easy non-region victory.

West Jordan's best moment: This was pure domination. The
Jaguars led 29-5 after one quarter, and it was over. This was a
great road win as West Jordan was able to empty its bench.

Taylorsville's best moment: There was none. The Warriors didn't
show up - for the second straight game. Taylorsville outscored
West Jordan 16-9 in the quarter, but it didn't mean anything at that
point. What has happened to this team?

Statistical notes: The score was 62-20 after three quarters.
Taylorsville's 36 points was its season low. West Jordan recorded
its fourth straight win.

What we learned from this game: The fans had to be disappointed
- even West Jordan's fans - because this should have been a better
game. But there's no doubt that West Jordan is rolling again.

Next: West Jordan travels to Jordan on Jan. 9. Taylorsville plays at
Copper Hills the same night.

Dec. 30 - West Jordan 71, Murray 60

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 21 points as West
Jordan rallied past Murray in the second half and took the non-
region victory.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 36-33 at
halftime, but dominated the third period, outscoring Murray 19-9, to
grab the lead. Mason Sawyer backed up Weirick with 15 points.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans offense pretty much stayed
on the perimeter. Murray used Markus Duran's shooting to jump to
a 17-10 first-quarter lead. Duran finished with 20 points, including
four three-pointers.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 20-23 from the free-throw line;
Murray was just 4-7. Ken Masic had 15 points for Murray. Tyson Holt
and Reyes Gallegos had 12 points each for the Jags.

What we learned from this game: This was an offensive battle,
and West Jordan got balanced scoring. The win was the Jags' third
straight.

Next: West Jordan goes to Taylorsville on Jan. 6. Murray travels to
Olympus to start Region 6 play the same night.

Dec. 19 - West Jordan 60, Weber 45

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 15 points and helped
West Jordan pull away from Weber in the fourth quarter and claim
the non-region victory.

West Jordan's best moment: West Jordan led only 42-36 at the
end of the third quarter, but outscored the Warriors 18-9 in the final
period. Jordan Weirick had 13 points and Tyson Holt 10. D.J.
Tialavea had a season-high eight points.

Weber's best moment: Carson Fuller led Weber with 13 points.
The Warriors shot 8-9 from the free-throw line. Weber is 2-4 on the
season.

Statistical notes: Both teams had five three-point baskets.
Gallegos and Mason Sawyer had two each for West Jordan, who
don't play at home again for a month.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan is 7-1 and right
behind Riverton in the region standings. Region 3 will be
interesting this year.

Next: West Jordan travels to play Murray on Dec. 30. Weber plays
host to
Alta on Monday (Dec. 22).

Dec. 17 - West Jordan 55, Davis 48

Story of the game: Mason Sawyer and Tyson Udy had big games
as West Jordan bounced back from its first loss the night before to
beat Davis in a non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The game was decided in the fourth
quarter, when the Jaguars' defense forced four consecutive Davis
turnovers. Sawyer and Udy had 13 points apiece. Reyes Gallegos
had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Davis' best moment: The Darts came out strong, but let West
Jordan back into the game in the second quarter. It was close until
the end. Chris Larabee had 13 points for Davis. Trevor Daniels
added 11 and James Cowser 10.

Statistical notes: For the third straight game, West Jordan trailed
after the first quarter. Udy's point total was a season high. The Jags
had a big advantage from the free-throw line (24-33 vs. 10-13).

What we learned from this game: It was good for the Jaguars to
play again right after their first defeat. Tough opponents await.

Next: West Jordan plays host to Weber on Friday (Dec. 19). Davis
travels to Cedar City to play in the Summer Games Invite this
weekend.

Dec. 16 - Skyline 57, West Jordan 41

Story of the game: Ryan Osterloh scored 21 points and Kevin
Wagstaff was a force on offense and defense, coming in with 15
points and hounding West Jordan guard Mason Sawyer all night in
the Eagles’ win over the previously unbeaten Jaguars.

West Jordan's best moment: Like the game before, the Jags
trailed in the first quarter, but they rallied in the second and even led
25-22. Reyes Gallegos had a nice game with 21 points.

Skyline's best moment: The game went back-and-forth until the
fourth quarter, when the Eagles defense held West Jordan to 1-14
shooting. The home crowd quieted as Skyline outscored the Jags
19-4 and claimed the victory.

Statistical notes: Gallegos had five three-pointers for West Jordan.
Wagstaff and Casey Taylor had two each for Skyline. Both teams
shot well from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan was ranked No. 1
by the Deseret News, so that will change next week. Skyline is 6-0
and should move up immediately.

Next: West Jordan returns to action tonight (Dec. 17) at home
against Davis.
Skyline travels to neighborhood rival Olympus on
Friday (Dec. 19).

Dec. 12 - West Jordan 58, Brighton 49

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 21 points and Weirick
and D.J. Tialavea controlled the rebounds in the second half as
West Jordan rallied with a huge third quarter to down Brighton in a
non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The third quarter belonged to the
Jags. Trailing 33-25, they rallied immediately. Reyes Gallegos
played big roles on offense and defense. They hit 10-14 shots
during that span and looked like a championship team.

Brighton's best moment: The Bengals were at their best in the first
quarter, racing to an 18-10 lead. Their passes were sharp, which
led to easy baskets. Corbin Miller also nailed three treys. They
looked sharp.

Statistical notes: It was a tale of two games. Miller was 3-3 from
outside in the first half, then Gallegos' defense pushed him out
further and he was just 1-5 after that. Tialavea had nine rebounds,
while Weirick had eight. Sam Wunderli played well for Brighton with
15 points and nine rebounds.

What we learned from this game: The Deseret News has West
Jordan No. 1 among 5A schools, so they're marked. This wasn't a
championship team in the first half, but the second half saw
potential.

Next: West Jordan plays host to Skyline in a battle of 5A unbeatens
on Tuesday (Dec. 16).
Brighton has Highland at home the same
night.

Dec. 9 - West Jordan 57, Syracuse 37

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos had a season-high 25 points
as West Jordan blew this game open in the fourth quarter and
earned a quality road win at Syracuse.

West Jordan's best moment: This game was closer than the
score indicated. It was 38-32 entering the final quarter. While
Gallegos was the big scorer, he had help. Jesse Herrin, Jordan
Weirick and Mason Sawyer had treys for West Jordan.

Syracuse's best moment: The Titans clamped down on West
Jordan in the first quarter and held a 7-6 lead. Hamblin had 10
points, including a couple of three pointers, for Syracuse.

Statistical notes: Even with 25 points, Gallegos had just one three-
point basket. West Jordan outscored Syracuse 19-5 in the final
quarter to make the game look like a blowout.

What we learned from this game: With the win, the Deseret News
moved West Jordan to No. 1 in its 5A rankings. The Jags will be a
"marked" opponent from now on.

Next: West Jordan returns home to take on Brighton on Friday (Dec.
12). Syracuse plays at Woods Cross the same night.

Dec. 5 - West Jordan 62, Pleasant Grove 58

Story of the game: Reyes Gallegos scored 20 points and led three
players in double figures as West Jordan solidified its spot as one
of 5A's top teams by holding off Pleasant Grove.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jags led early, but PG rallied
and went ahead 28-27. There, West Jordan got on a roll and went
on a 26-9 run. The Jags reportedly had a good student section
travel and cheer the team on to victory.

Pleasant Grove's best moment: The Vikings rallied late in the
game to within three points, but couldn't hit the tying three-pointer
when they needed. C.J. Wilcox led the way with 29 points.

Statistical leaders: Mason Sawyer backed up Gallegos with 12
points, while Tyson Udy scored 11 points, which marks the first
time he has been in double figures.

What we learned from this game: Big win for the Jags, who are
No. 2 among 5A teams in the Deseret News rankings. Since PG is
a good team, the Jags feel like they now belong up there.

Next: West Jordan travels to play Syracuse on Dec. 9. Pleasant
Grove travels to Provo the same night.

Dec. 3 - West Jordan 49, Hillcrest 35

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick and Reyes Gallegos almost
outscored Hillcrest by themselves, putting in 17 points apiece, as
West Jordan's defense proved to be better than the Huskies in the
non-region win.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 26-18, but Hillcrest
bottled them up in the third quarter and narrowed the gap. West
Jordan broke lose in the final eight minutes, outscoring Hillcrest 16-
8 and won the game going away.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies did something right in the
third quarter, when they frustrated West Jordan into only seven
points and cut the margin to six points. Hillcrest's defense is its
strong point, but wasn't enough to stay with West Jordan.

Statistical leaders: Mason Sawyer had eight points and D.J.
Tialavea put in five. The Jags were 21-28 from the free-throw line,
which made a big difference in this game.

What we learned from this game: The Jags are 2-0, but have
played both games at home and we're not sure how tough those
first couple of opponents are. The schedule gets more difficult from
now on.

Next: West Jordan hits the road to play Pleasant Grove. Hillcrest
travels to play neighborhood rival
Cottonwood.

Nov. 25 - West Jordan 79, Cyprus 27

Story of the game: Jordan Weirick scored 20 points and led three
players in double figures as West Jordan blew out Cyprus in an
embarrassing manner in the opening game for both teams.

West Jordan's best moment: This was a coach's dream game.
Because the Jaguars had such a big lead, they were able to empty
their bench. Ten players scored for West Jordan and played in front
of their parents. This was a good confidence-builder.

Cyprus' best moment: This was a stinker. Marcus Bryce led Cyprus
with seven points, and Weston Warr had six. But Cyprus couldn't
score. The Pirates were down 27-2 after one quarter, and 45-8 at
halftime. Not a good way to start the season.

Statistical leaders: Reyes Gallegos had 12 points for West Jordan
and Mason Sawyer added 10. The 27 points are a low for any Utah
boys team - so far - this season, so the Jags can say they lead the
state in defense.

What we learned from this game: The Jaguars are going to be
good. Playing Cyprus is a good idea at the start of the season, but it
doesn't show just how good West Jordan might be.

Next: West Jordan has a home game Dec. 3 against Hillcrest.
Cyprus plays at Taylorsville on Dec. 5.
