Story of the game: Jan Hazlett scored 21 points and pulled down 14
rebounds as Syracuse pulled away from West Jordan and
eliminated the Jaguars in the first round of the 5A state tournament.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars stayed close in the first
half, but Syracuse would move further ahead each time. Marina
Leuluai led West Jordan with 12 points, while Gabriella Rodriguez
had 10, despite a poor-shooting game.

Syracuse's best moment: Kiana Fonua and McKayla Williams
added nine points for Syracuse. Fonua also did a nice job defending
Rodriguez in the second half.

Statistical notes: Syracuse had a big free-throw advantage, hitting
18 of 33 shots. West Jordan was 10-15. Rodriguez and Kortni
Atkinson each had a pair of three-pointers for the Jaguars.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan entered the tourney
with the worst overall record and was given a tough seed. The Jags
finished 5-16.

Next: West Jordan is finished for the season. Syracuse advanced to
play Pleasant Grove.

Feb. 17 - Kearns 48, West Jordan 46

Story of the game: Brooke Larsen scored 13 points, and her
teammates had their outside shots working, as Kearns rallied to
beat West Jordan in the battle for third place in Region 3.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jags led most of the game ... until
the final quarter, when they were outscored 20-14. Gabriella
Rodriguez was the top scorer with 15 points, including three treys.
Marina Leuluai had 13 points.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars accomplished this feat on the
road. They trailed 32-28 entering the fourth quarter, but put forth a
20-point effort. Kearns nailed five three-pointers, including two each
by Ostberg and Dallas Vega.

Statistical notes: Kearns was 17-26 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 7-11. Kearns swept the season series.

What we learned from this game: Both teams move on to the 5A
state tourney, but Kearns earned the No. 3 seed.

Next: West Jordan takes on Syracuse in the opening round of the
state tourney Feb. 23.
Kearns will play Fremont.

Feb. 12 - Riverton 52, West Jordan 23

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 11 points and Alle Finch
had 10, but it was Riverton's defense that was the dominating force
in the Silverwolves easy win over West Jordan in a Region 3 game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars came back in the second
half and played evenly with Riverton. Leslie Bateman led West
Jordan with six points.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 14-4 after the first
quarter and 31-7 at halftime. The game was over at that point.
Riverton allowed only six baskets the entire game.

Statistical notes: Ten different players scored for Riverton. The
Silverwolves outscored West Jordan 21-16 in the second half.

What we learned from this game: This was never a winnable game
for West Jordan, so the loss was not surprising or even damaging.

Next: West Jordan plays host to Kearns to decide third place on Feb.

Feb. 10 - West Jordan 66, Copper Hills 43

Story of the game: Marina Leuluai scored a season-high 19 points
as West Jordan downed Copper Hills and officially clinched a berth
in the 5A state tournament.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars jumped on Copper Hills
early, claiming a 17-7 first-quarter lead, and they just continued to
extend it. Gabriella Rodriguez scored 11 points.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies got 13 points from Kim
Bohne and 12 by Marissa Lazenby, and that was the bulk of their
offense. Copper Hills was competitive, but couldn't get a scoring
streak during the game.

Statistical notes: Lazenby had a pair of three-pointers for Copper
Hills. West Jordan was 7-12 from the free-throw line; Copper Hills
was 7-15.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan won its second
straight game and can relax. However, the Jags would like to enter
the state tourney with some momentum.

Feb. 5 - West Jordan 42, Hunter 35

Story of the game: Gabriella Rodriguez scored 12 points as West
Jordan got off to a nice lead early and held on to it en route to the
Region 3 win.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 15-6 after the first
period, and extended it slightly to 25-15 at halftime. West Jordan
turned back all of Hunter's rallies. Marina Leuluai added seven
points.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines held West Jordan to three
points in the final quarter, but couldn't muster enough offense
themselves. Iosua had 12 points and Utu Bloomfield nine.

Statistical notes: Rodriguez had a pair of three-pointers for West
Jordan. The Jags were 12-14 from the free-throw line; Hunter was
6-10.

What we learned from this game: This win likely clinched a
post-season berth for West Jordan, and the Jags now own the
tiebreaker against Hunter.

Next: West Jordan goes to Copper Hills on Feb. 10. Hunter has

Jan. 29 - Bingham 79, West Jordan 45

Story of the game: Nicole Newbold scored 14 points and pulled
down eight rebounds and Bingham used its usual team effort to
whip West Jordan in a Region 3 game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars lost their third straight,
and did play competitively, despite the score. Gabriella Rodriguez
had 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners had 14 players score this time.
They led 18-4 after the first quarter and were never challenged. This
team has so much depth its scary.

Statistical notes: Bingham continued to add to its lead, even while
playing reserves and JV players. Bingham was 23-34 from the
free-throw line; West Jordan was 10-22. Four different Miner players
hit three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: The Jags have been unable to
upset the three teams in front of them, so they must continue to beat
the teams below (Hunter, Kearns) in order to reach the post-season.

Next: West Jordan plays Hunter at home on Feb. 5. Bingham goes to

Jan. 27 - Kearns 59, West Jordan 48

Story of the game: Micalee Orton scored 21 points as Kearns built a
nice lead in the second quarter and held off West Jordan in a Region
3 game.

Kearns' best moment: The Cougars led 11-10 after one quarter, but
extended it to 34-23 at halftime. Kearns was able to keep the lead at
the free-throw line late in the game. Brooke Larsen added 16 points.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars tried to rally in the
second half, and actually had some success, but they were too far
behind. Julie Larsen had 12 points and Marina Leuluai had 10.

Statistical notes: Kearns was 20-34 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was just 5-14.

What we learned from this game: This was the Cougars' second
straight win over a team lower than them in the standings, which just
cements their spot in third place.

Next: West Jordan goes to Bingham on Jan. 29. Kearns plays host to

Jan. 22 - Riverton 72, West Jordan 30

Story of the game: Dani Lockhart scored 22 points and helped
Riverton roll to an easy victory over West Jordan in a Region 3 game
and remain unbeaten.

West Jordan's best moment: This was never a winnable game for
the Jaguars. Gabriella Rodriguez had nine points and Leslie
Bateman seven.

Riverton's best moment: The Silverwolves led 16-6 after one quarter
and 41-17 at halftime. They flooded the game with reserves after that.
Shelby Ostler added 11 points as 11 players scored.

Statistical notes: West Jordan fouled a lot and Riverton hit 23-35
free throws. After four region games, Riverton is outscoring its
opponents by almost 35 points per game.

What we learned from this game: This loss to Riverton is not a big
deal. For West Jordan to reach the post-season, it needs to
concentrate of winning games where it has a chance.

Next: West Jordan plays at Kearns on Jan. 27. Riverton takes on
Copper Hills at home the same night.

Jan. 20 - West Jordan 54, Copper Hills 35

Story of the game: Leslie Bateman scored 12 points as West
Jordan rolled to a 17-4 first-quarter lead and beat Copper Hills in a
Region 3 game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars controlled the first and
third quarters, and that was plenty. After Copper Hills rallied to within
eight points, the Jags went on an 11-2 run to put the game away and
earn their second straight win.

Copper Hills' best moment: Kim Bohne scored eight points and four
teammates had six each. The Grizzlies played a good second
quarter and were close at halftime.

Statistical notes: Copper Hills shot 7-17 from the free-throw line.
West Jordan was 8-22. Each team had a pair of three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: You can't complain about two
straight wins, although it will probably end with Riverton up next. Still,
the Jags have post-season potential.

Jan. 15 - West Jordan 52, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Leslie Bateman scored 14 points and Taylor
Johnson added 11 as West Jordan pulled away from Hunter in the
second half and claimed its first Region 3 victory.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars dominated the second
half, outscoring Hunter 26-11. West Jordan shot well. This win could
do wonders for the Jags' confidence.

Hunter's best moment: The games was tied 11-11 after the first
quarter and the Wolverines trailed just 26-20 at halftime. Innie Patailii
was the top scorer with nine points.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 12-17 from the free-throw line;
Hunter was 7-9. Each team made two three-pointers. West Jordan's
52 points was a season high.

What we learned from this game: After opening with nine straight
losses, the Jaguars have suddenly won two of three games and
have a chance for a post-season playoff berth.

Next: West Jordan has Copper Hills at home on Jan. 20. Hunter

Jan. 13 - Bingham 65, West Jordan 30

Story of the game: Nicole Yazzie led a balanced scoring attack with
14 points as Bingham built a big lead early, substituted freely, and
whipped West Jordan in each team's Region 3 opener.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars played better in the
second half, scoring 21 of their 30 points. Their offense has been
better lately, but this was never a winnable game.

Bingham's best moment: The Miners led 14-2 after the first quarter
and 32-9 by halftime. Fourteen different players scored for Bingham,
who were never in danger of losing this game.

Statistical notes: The 30 points given up was a season best for
Bingham's defense. So far, eight of Bingham's 12 games have been
routs (20 points or more).

What we learned from this game: This was the region opener and it
wasn't a surprise. Bingham and Riverton are in a "different league,"
but the other games are certainly possible wins.

Next: West Jordan goes to Hunter on Jan. 15. Bingham plays host to

Jan. 6 - West Jordan 47, Alta 38

Story of the game: Taylor Johnson scored 13 points and Gabriella
Rodriguez had 12 as West Jordan rallied with a big fourth quarter
and earned its first victory of the season.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars trailed 34-30 entering the
final quarter, but dominated with a 17-4 run. Kortni Atkinson added
10 points for West Jordan.

Alta's best moment: The Hawks led most of the game, and still had
a chance late due to West Jordan's poor free-throw shooting.
McKenzie Morrison led Alta with 14 points.

Statistical notes: Alta's 38-point total was a season low for West
Jordan's defense. Alta was 10-15 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 11-23. Atkinson and Rodriguez had a pair of
three-pointers each.

What we learned from this game: The Jags finally earn their first
win, and it comes just in time - right before the region season starts.

Next: West Jordan has a home game against 5A power Bingham.

Dec. 30 - Hillcrest 55, West Jordan 50

Story of the game: Lexi Amundsen scored 12 points and Kelsey
Heard had 11 as Hillcrest used a big third quarter effort to rally past
West Jordan and keep the Jaguars winless in a non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars played well in the first
half and it seemed like their first victory was possible. Marina Leuluai
had nine points for West Jordan.

Hillcrest's best moment: The Huskies trailed 26-21 at halftime, but
came out roaring in the third quarter, outscoring West Jordan 21-7 to
take a nine-point lead. Hillcrest hit 22-37 free throws, many of them
down the stretch.

Statistical notes: The win was Hillcrest's fourth straight. West
Jordan was just 4-14 from the free-throw line. The Jags outscored
Hillcrest in every quarter but the third. Leslie Bateman and Shelby
Misrasi had eight each for WJ.

What we learned from this game:  The Jags dropped to 0-9, but the
five-point loss was their second-closest game this season. The 50
points was also a season high. There is hope.

Dec. 19 - Payson 46, West Jordan 37

Story of the game: Morgan Bateman scored 16 points and Lexie
Bushman added 12 as Payson rallied in the fourth quarter to edge
West Jordan in a non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars led 18-11 at halftime and
still had a 27-25 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Gabriella
Rodriguez had nine points, on three treys.

Payson's best moment: The Lions outcored West Jordan 14-9 in the
third quarter and 21-10 in the final period. Their big advantage was at
the free-throw line, where they hit 22-29 charity shots.

Statistical notes: Leslie Bateman had eight points and Kortni
Atkinson seven for West Jordan. The Jags were 10-24 from the
free-throw line, but connected on five three-pointers.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan dropped to 0-8 withe
loss, but this was their closest opportunity for a win.

Next: West Jordan is back in action Dec. 30 at home against

Dec. 12 - Sky View 81, West Jordan 49

Story of the game: Nicole Hansen scored 17 points and Amy Andrus
added 15 as Sky View bombed away from the perimeter, making
eight three-point baskets, and buried West Jordan in a non-region
game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars played a good first
quarter, but fell behind 42-25 at halftime. While the defense got
burned, the offense played its best of the season. Gabriella
Rodriguez had 12 points, all on three-pointers.

Sky View's best moment: The Bobcats' offense never let up. They
remained unbeaten and topped 80 points for the second time. Dani
Egbert had 14 points, Taylor Rock 13 and Kelsey Naylor 11.

Statistical notes: The Jags had five three-point baskets, which is a
season hight. Their point total - 49 - was also the best this year.

What we learned from this game: West Jordan got into an offensive
shootout with Sky View, which can't be won.

Next: West Jordan plays at Payson Dec. 19. Sky View travels to

Story of the game: Hannah Bezdijan scored 10 points and Skyline
pulled away in the third quarter to claim the non-region victory and
keep West Jordan winless.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars only matched Skyline in
the fourth quarter, when the Eagles had filled the game with
reserves. Leuluai led the Jags with six points.

Skyline's best moment: The Eagles led 20-12 at halftime, but
outscored West Jordan 12-2 in the third quarter. The Eagles had a
season-high four three-point baskets.

Statistical notes: West Jordan's 21 points was a season low
offensive output. Skyline was 11-16 from the free-throw line; West
Jordan was 2-6.

What we learned from this game: There was good news. West
Jordan's defense limited Skyline to 41 points, which tied for the
lowest points the team has given up in a game.

Story of the game: Haley Holmstead scored 21 points as American
Fork remained unbeaten with an easy win over West Jordan in a
non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: This game was never competitive.
The Jags trailed 21-6 after one quarter and never got any closer.
Marina Leuluai had seven points.

American Fork's best moment: Amy Krommenhoek had 14 points,
including four three-pointers as 11 Cavemen players scored. AF led
37-15 at halftime.

Statistical notes: This was West Jordan's biggest loss of the
season, and 78 points given up was a season high. The Jags were
4-12 from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: The Jags dropped to 0-5 and
might view this as a setback. American Fork, however, is one of the
best 5A teams in the state.

Dec. 5 - Timpview 41, West Jordan 38

Story of the game: Chelsea Bridgewater scored 25 points and
pulled down 13 rebounds as Timpview held off West Jordan in a
non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jags fell to 0-4, but are improving.
This game was close all the way. Gabriella Rodriguez had 11 points
and Marina Leuluai nine.

Timpview's best moment: The game was tied after the first quarter,
and Timpview held a 21-17 advantage at halftime. Neither team shot
free throws well. This was Timpview's season opener and the
T-birds hung on to win.

Statistical notes: West Jordan was 13-34 from the free-throw line;
Timpview was 7-17. Leslie Bateman had eight points. Rodriguez hit
the team's only three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: A tough loss, for sure, but a win is
on the horizon. Rodriguez's scoring really made a difference.

Story of the game: Addi Moore scored 16 points and Jacquoy Lee
had 13 as Layton finally pulled away from West Jordan in the fourth
quarter to hand the Jaguars their third straight loss.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jags trailed 13-4 after one
quarter, but their defense improved and turned this into a game.
Marina Leuluai was the Jags' top scorer with eight points.

Layton's best moment: The Lancers put up 24 points in the fourth
quarter to finally get some breathing room. Moore had three treys for
the Lancers, who improved to 3-0.

Statistical notes: Leslie Bateman added seven points for West
Jordan. Maddy Stubbs and Kortni Atkinson had three-point baskets.
The Jags were 6-17 from the free-throw line; Layton was 14-30.

What we learned from this game: The Jags dropped to 0-3, but this
was their best effort. They are playing four games in five nights, and
improvement is being made.

Story of the game: Marquelle Funk scored 18 points and Megan
Smith had 16 as Lone Peak broke the game open in the second
quarter and beat West Jordan in a non-region game.

West Jordan's best moment: The Jaguars had a better offensive
effort. They trailed 11-10 after one quarter before things went badly.
Marina Leuluai led West Jordan with eight points.

Lone Peak's best moment: A 20-7 second quarter spurt gave Lone
Peak a 31-17 halftime lead. The Knights expanded it further in the
fourth period, helped by their 18-28 free-throw shooting. Whitney
Johnson added 13 points.

Statistical notes: Leslie Bateman and Taylor Johnson had six points
for West Jordan. Kortni Atkinson hit her team's first three-pointer of
the season.

What we learned from this game: The Jaguars are 0-2 on the
season, but Lone Peak will likely be one of the top teams in 5A.

Story of the game: Chelsea Kocherhans scored 15 points and
Shanna Halalilo had 14 as Mountain View broke open a close game
in the second half and routed West Jordan in the Jaguars' opener.
