Oct. 31 - Timpview 49, West 7

Story of the game - QB Casey Rumsey passed for 198 yards and Levi
Te'o ran for three scores as Timpview dominated en route to a
convincing opening-round win over West in the 4-A playoffs.

West's' best moment - Trailing 49-0, the Panthers scored on a 2-yard
run by QB Daniel Wray.

Timpview's best moment - The unbeaten Thunderbirds held a 28-0
lead at halftime, and scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to
put it away.

What was learned from the game - This game was never in doubt.
With West's offense relying on RB Tana Afeaki, staying close was
going to be difficult unless he could break through.

Next - West is done for the season. Timpview advances and will play
host to Sky View next week.

Oct. 23 - East 34, West 7

Story of the game - East QB Danny Tuai passed for three
touchdowns, and Sunia Tautioli rushed for 108 yards as East rolled
past West with a big second half. Since it beat Highland earlier this
season, East won the mythical "Salt Lake City championship."

West's' best moment - Early in the game, Tipa Valsigano forced a
fumble at the 2-yard line. Two plays later, QB Daniel Wray scored on a
sneak to give the Panthers the lead. West's defense had a big game,
forcing four sacks.

East's best moment - After a fumble led to West's touchdown, the
Leopards' defense dominated. The game was tied at 7-7 at halftime,
but East erupted for 20 fourth-quarter points to secure the win on
West's home field.

What was learned from the game - The Panthers have made the
playoffs, and the defense played great in the first half. Because West
couldn't generate another win, though, it means the Panthers will have
a tough playoff opener.

Next - West travels to Timpview in a first-round game. East will play at
home against Sky View.

Oct. 15 - Highland 35, West 12

Story of the game - Highland QB Nick Orchard ran for 177 yards and
three touchdowns, and passed for another as the Rams jumped over
West in the Region 6 standings with a convincing home win over the
Panthers.

West's best moment - The second quarter. RB Tana Afeaki had 90
yards on 21 carries for the game, including a 5-yard TD run. A few
minutes later, Vai Mafi returned a fumble that set up QB Daniel Wray's
short TD run that put West within 14-12 at halftime.

Highland's best moment - Orchard showed his speed several times
with TD runs of 30 and 69 yards on option plays. The senior also threw
a 46-yard scoring pass to Josh Anderson. Highland dominated the
second half. The Rams' defense allowed just one "big" play in the
second half, and it didn't result in any points.

What was learned from the game - This wasn't one of West's better
games. The Panthers had several "mental" errors, including 13
penalties. West had seven offsides calls against it.

Next - West returns home to take on rival East. Highland ends the
regular season at home against
Murray.

                    WEST FOOTBALL - 2008
QB Daniel Wray calls the signals
against East.
Deseret News photo
West's best moment - It was a cold night, and the Spartans fumbled frequently in the first half. On West's first offensive play, Afeaki ran 75
yards before being stopped at Murray's 1-yard line. West rolled up almost 300 yards of offense by halftime and held a 34-7 lead.

Murray's' best moment - Dee Hamala returned another kickoff for a touchdown (his second this season). Tyler Prestwich was a bruising
runner, and had 55 yards on 14 carries, including a TD. Murray had 110 total yards in the second half, compared to West's 59.

What was learned from the game - Afeaki was clearly the difference. He had two TD's rushing, one receiving and scored on a two-point
conversion. The win secured a playoff berth and West has a chance to be Region 6's No. 2 seed.

Next - West travels to play Highland. Murray has a home game against
Olympus.

Links - There was no media coverage of the game, as it was never reported. Statistics and game information was obtained after securing
the film from coach Schreiter.

Oct. 3 - West 35, Cyprus 21

Story of the game - Tana Afeaki rushed for 227 yards and QB Daniel Wray completed 10 of 15 passes for 125 yards as the Panthers
shook off last week's loss to Cottonwood with an impressive win over Cyprus in a Region 6 game.

West's best moment - This was Afeaki's best game of the season, and it was helped by Wray's ability to throw the football. The defense
also came alive as Foueti Afeaki returned an interception for a touchdown.

Cyprus' best moment - The Pirates offense was on fire in the second quarter, as they matched West by putting 21 points on the
scoreboard to go into halftime tied. Cyprus didn't score in the second half.

What was learned from the game - Is there any other player more important to the success of his team than Tana Afeaki? West is on a
roll, having won four of its last five games and is ripe for a playoff berth.

Next - West plays host to Murray. Cyprus returns home to take on Highland.

Sept. 26 - Cottonwood 40, West 0

Story of the game - Isi Sofele rushed for 138 yards and scored three touchdowns, and also showed his punt return talents as
Cottonwood roared to a 40-0 halftime lead and coasted to its Region 6 win over West.

West's best moment - Panthers coach Randy Schreiter admitted his team was outplayed the entire game. West did manage a decent
drive late in the game, but was turned away at the 2-yard line. Tana Afeaki was a workhorse, rushing for 40 yards on 14 carries.

Cottonwood's best moment - The Colts scored 26 points in the second quarter. QB Steve Romero was connecting on his passes, but
Sofele also was electric every time he touched the ball. The Colts held West to just one first down in the opening half.

What was learned from the game - West isn't a championship-caliber team, but there are only a few 4-A schools who can compete with
Cottonwood. The Panthers have a chance to get back on the winning track the next two weeks.

Next - West returns home to take on Cyprus. Cottonwood travels to play Highland.

Sept. 19 - West 28, Olympus 21

Story of the game - RB Tana Afeaki had 250 all-purpose yards and QB Daniel Wray ran 65 yards for a touchdown late in the game to lead
West to an exciting 28-21 Region 6 win over Olympus in its homecoming game.

West's best moment - Afeaki was impressive from the start. He took a swing pass 65 yards on West's first possession to set up a TD.
The next time he touched the ball, he raced 80 yards for a score.

Oly's best moment - QB Spencer Harris had more than 300 yards passing, including TD passes to Carter Young and Austin Walker.
Harris also ran for a score.

What was learned from the game - West is 2-0 in region play and has won three straight games. While the wins have been against the
region's lower tier, it has given the Panthers momentum.

Next week - West travels to play Region 6 power Cottonwood. Olympus returns home to take on Highland.

Sept. 12 - West 26, Granger 0

Story of the game - RB Tana Afeaki rushed for 143 yards on 23 carries as West played its best game of the season, opening Region 6
play by whipping Granger 26-0 and ruining the Lancers' homecoming.

West's best moment - With coach Randy Schreiter suspended from this game, Afeaki led the offense, and the defense also helped.
Leading 10-0 at the start of the third quarter, Junior Vea picked up a fumble and ran 37 yards for a touchdown.

Granger's best moment - This is the second straight disappointing loss. On one drive, QB Brentt Phillips had runs of 25 and 12 yards to
get the Lancers into scoring position, but it fizzled.

What was learned from the game - A shutout loss certainly can't help the momentum of Granger's already struggling offense. Things
don't get easier either as the Lancers hit the road for the first time. They also player Region 6 powers in their next two games.

Next week - West returns home to play Olympus. Granger hits the road to meet Highland.

Sept. 5 - West 15, Woods Cross 14

Story of the game - QB Daniel Wray ran for one TD and passed for another as West won its first game of the season by ralling for a 15-14
victory over Woods Cross in a non-region game.

West's best moment - Trailing 8-0 at halftime and beset by penalties, the Panthers' goal-line stand gave them a chance. Wray then led
them on a 99-yard drive that ended on a 7-yard run by Wray. Tana Afeaki scored on a two-point conversion to tie the game. On their next
drive, the Panthers went ahead on a 10-yard pass from Wray to Junior Vea.

Woods Cross' best moment - The difference in the game was a missed extra point. The Wildcats seemingly were going to tie the game
after David Cusick scored on an 11-yard run with 3:44 left. Zachary Cope's PAT, however, sailed wide left.

What we learned from this game - West RB Tana Afeaki was sorely missed in West's last game. He had 92 yards rushing, plus a
successful 66-yard halfback pass.

Next: West opens Region 6 play with a winnable game at Granger. Woods Cross starts Region 5 action by playing host to Mountain Crest.

Aug. 29 - Tooele 15, West 10

Story of the game - Jordan Clemente ran for one touchdown and Mile Leakehe caught another from QB Chris Iorg as the Buffaloes won
their first game and West remained winless.

West's best moment - The Panthers trailed just 7-3 at halftime. Tooele was in the "red zone," but the Panthers' defense sacked Iorg on
the last play of the half and gave West a big momentum boost. Sure enough, the Panthers got a turnover to start the third quarter and
scored to take the lead.

Tooele's best moment - In your first win, the best moment is almost always when the clock strikes 0:00. The offense dominated in the
first half, and gave the Buffaloes the lead. The defense played a key role in the second half, recording a safety following a poor punt snap
and that made the difference.

What was learned from the game - The two teams are still trying to find out who they are. But coach Ray Groth got his first win, and the
Buffaloes did it with defense in the second half. For West, the Panthers need to find an explosive player.

Next: West travels a few miles north on I-15 to play Woods Cross. Tooele will play at Ben Lomond.

Transcript's article,

Aug. 22 - Juan Diego 24, West 6

Story of the game -Tyler Morales ran for two touchdowns and Brian May hit Zach Kinniger on a long scoring pass as Juan Diego's offense
got the Soaring Eagle off to a big lead, and the defense held West in check in the non-region win. It reversed a win by West last year on
what was JD's home field opener.

West's best moment - The Panthers didn't have many. They shut down Juan Diego in the second half and QB Daniel Wray hit Alex Carr
on a scoring, but penalties and frustration dominated the action. This was not a clean game, and coach Randy Schreiter was likely glad to
get back to practice Monday.

Juan Diego's best moment - The first quarter. The Soaring Eagle scored early, and often, and raced to a 21-0 lead. West was never in the
game. After a while, West got frustrated and you can't help but like to see that in your opponent.

What was learned from the game? Juan Diego has built itself into a 3-A football power, and there's not a lot of difference between 3-A
and 4-A schools. West learned it has to control its emotions as two of its better players were ejected from the game.

Next - West will play a non-region game at Tooele. Ironically, Juan Diego will be playing across the valley at Grantsville.
