Feb. 24 - Springville 57, West 34

Story of the game: Lexi Eaton scored 21 points as Springville
jumped to a 25-2 lead and turned back West in the first round of the
4A state tournament.

West's best moment: The Panthers rallied in the second and third
quarters and eventually cut Springville's lead to 37-25, but that was
as close as they would get. Valencia Manu led West with 11 points,
and Amy Christensen had eight.

Springville's best moment: The Red Devils dominated the boards,
outrebounding West 45-24. After West got within 12, Springville called
timeout and then started another scoring streak to put the game
away. Ashley Kroneberger added 10 points.

Statistical notes: Manu had three treys for West. Eaton had nine
rebounds for Springville, which had 20 offensive boards. This was
West's first game this season against a Utah County school.

What we learned from this game: The Panthers were quickly
eliminated from post-season, even though they came on strong at
the end.

Next: West finished with a 12-9 record. Springville advanced to play
Roy in a quarterfinal game.

Feb. 17 - West 39, Olympus 37

Story of the game: Destynee Rios hit a three-pointer - her only points
of the night - as the final buzzer sounded lifted West an upset victory
in the Region 6 finale for both teams.

West's best moment: The Panthers trailed 28-24 entering the final
quarter and were down by a point when Rios scored the winning
basket. Amy Christensen finished with 11 points and Ashley Quarles
had 10.

Olympus' best moment: Heather Giffin scored 15 points to lead
Olympus. The loss wasn't too surprising as the Titans haven't been
playing their best basketball lately.

Statistical notes: West shot 6-10 free throws, while Olympus was
only 5-13. West hit three treys, while Olympus didn't have any.

What we learned from this game: The win means West goes into
the 4A state tournament on a four-game win streak.

Next: West and Olympus both advance to the state tourney. West will
play Springville Feb. 24. Olympus takes on Roy.

Feb. 13 - West 52, Cyprus 50

Story of the game: Destynee Rios scored 13 points and Amy
Christensen had 12 as West held off Cyprus and clinched fourth
place in Region 6.

West's' best moment: The Panthers led the entire game, jumping to
a 10-2 first-quarter lead, and hit enough of their free throws to claim
the win. Valencia Manu added 10 points for West.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates put out a 20-point effort in the
fourth quarter, led by high-scoring Kirstie Henriod, who finished with
23 points. Sanshae Rasmussen had 10 points.

Statistical notes: Rios and Henriod each had three treys for their
teams. West, however, finished with six three-pointers. Both teams
shot just over 50 percent from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: West moved a game ahead of
Cottonwood, but owns the tiebreaker from its win over Murray.

Next: West finishes the regular season at home against Olympus
Feb. 17.
Cyprus plays at East the same night.

Feb. 10 - West 43, East 27

Story of the game: Rikie Gregg scored 14 points and led West's
devastating outside shooting attack as the Panthers defeated rival
East and earned a 4A state tournament berth.

West's best moment: West led 22-9 at halftime, and then kept
pouring it on in the third quarter to put the game away. The Panthers
had seven three-point baskets, led by Gregg with three.

East's best moment: The Leopards played West tough at their place,
but not here in West's gym. East just didn't have enough offense to
keep pace. Laura Kruse was East's top scorer with five points.

Statistical notes: East was just 6-18 from the free-throw line; West
was 4-9. East had just one three-pointer.

What we learned from this game: This is the 95th year of the
East-West rivalry. Next year, the teams will be in different regions, so
the West booster club made a nice presentation commemorating
this rivalry.

Next: West plays at Cyprus Feb. 13. East goes to Murray the same
night.

shots as West grabbed a big lead and then hung on to upset Murray
in a Region 6 game.

West's best moment: The Panthers took a 13-3 lead in the first
quarter and even managed to extend it to a 12-point margin entering
the final period. Lomalinda Talakai had eight points. Three others
had seven.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans put together a big rally in the
fourth quarter, and it was almost enough to earn the win. Mariah
Duran had 19 points, including four three-pointers.

Statistical notes: West was only 3-9 from the free-throw line; Murray
was 10-18. Maddy Woodard had nine points for Murray.

What we learned from this game: West wasn't expected to win this
game, but the victory kept the Panthers tied with Cottonwood in fourth
place. One more win - or a Cyprus loss - puts West into the 4A state
tournament.

Next: West takes on East at home on Feb. 10. Murray travels to play
Highland the same night.

Feb. 3 - Highland 50, West 37

Story of the game: Chanel Roe scored 15 points and Mixsa Kafi had
14 as Highland blew past West in the third quarter and won its sixth
straight Region 6 game.

West's best moment: The Panthers scored half of their points while
trying to come back in the fourth quarter. Amy Christensen led West
with eight points, while Ashley Quarles had seven.

Highland's best moment: The Rams led 15-12 at halftime, but
outscored West 19-7 in the pivotal third quarter to take a
commanding lead. Highland hit enough of its free throws to prevent a
rally.

Statistical notes: Highland was 11-21 from the free-throw line; West
was just 2-7. West had three treys from different players.

What we learned from this game: The loss dropped West back into
a tie for fourth place in the Region 6 standings.

the same night.

period when the Panthers broke loose. Amy Christensen added 12
points and Ashley Quarles and Destynee Rios had 11.

Cottonwood's best moment: The Colts rallied from a 13-12 deficit to
take a three-point lead at halftime. Angie Schwartz topped
Cottonwood with 12 points, while Fehi Fakailoatonga had 11.

Statistical notes: Quarles and Rios had three treys each as West
had seven for the game. West scored 25 points in the final quarter.
West was 8-13 from the free-throw line; Cottonwood was 14-21.

What we learned from this game: West captured its second straight
win and now feels better about earning a 4A state tournament berth.

Jan. 27 - West 51, Granger 42

Story of the game: Amy Christensen and Destynee Rios scored 12
points apiece, but it was Granger's defense that made the difference
in the second half of West's Region 6 victory.

West's best moment: The Panthers trailed 29-27 at halftime, but
held Granger to single digits in each quarter. Ashley Quarles added
10 points for West.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers took a 14-10 lead at the end of
the first quarter, but had trouble scoring after halftime. Martha Haiola
paced Granger with 11 points, while Mary Lavekihelotu had 10.

Statistical notes: West was 7-17 from the free-throw line; Granger
was 4-12. Rios had three treys for West, and Quarles had two. Haiola
had two treys for Granger.

What we learned from this game: The win ended a two-game losing
streak and just helps West's chances of earning a 4A state
tournament berth.

Next: West plays at Cottonwood on Jan. 30. Granger is at East the
same night.

Jan. 23 - Highland 45, West 41

Story of the game: Mixsa Kafi scored 13 points and Beauty Taukalau
had 12 as Highland rallied in the fourth quarter to take a tough
Region 6 win over West.

West's best moment: Valencia Manu had 19 points for West, which
had a chance to win this game until the final seconds.

Highland's best moment: The game was close the entire time, and
West had a 34-32 lead entering the final period. Anatoa Lauti added
eight points.

Statistical notes: Highland was 10-18 from the free-throw line; West
was just 2-10. Manu had three treys for West.

What we learned from this game: West has lost two straight to the
top teams in the region. The next two games are winnable, and the
Panthers need them to reach the post-season.

Next: West plays host to Granger on Jan. 27. Highland returns home
to take on
East.

Jan. 20 - Olympus 49, West 40

Story of the game: Heather Giffin scored 19 points and pulled down
eight rebounds as Olympus held off West and stayed unbeaten in
Region 6 play.

West's best moment: The Panthers made a nice rally in the second
quarter to get back into the game and were never really out of it until
the final seconds. Amy Christensen had 14 points and Valencia
Manu 10.

Oly's best moment: The Titans led the entire game, thanks to a 15-7
spurt in the first quarter. They spent most of the fourth quarter at the
free-throw line, where they ended up hitting 21-34 shots. Annie
Canevari added nine points.

Statistical notes: West actually had three more field goals than Oly,
but the free-throw difference was just too much. Kainoa Bowman had
a pair of three-pointers for Oly. Rikie Gregg and Manu had two each
for West.

What we learned from this game: The loss ended a two-game win
streak, but at least West is in the middle of the pack. The Panthers
need an upset win or two to make the post-season.

Next: West will meet Highland at home on Jan. 23. Oly travels to East
the same night.

withstood a Cyprus rally in the third quarter and then rebuilt it with
three-point baskets from Gregg and Manu.

Cyprus' best moment: The Pirates found their shooting stroke in the
second half. They closed the gap to within five points at one time.
Kristie Henriod led Cyprus with 19 points.

Statistical notes: West had five three-point baskets, led by Gregg
with three. West was just 7-15 from the free-throw line. Cyprus was
10-18.

tournament.

home the same night.

Jan. 13 - West 34, East 33

Story of the game: Valencia Manu scored 16 points as West
managed to hold off East, even though the Leopards had four shots
miss in the last 14 seconds of the game.

West's best moment: Everyone will have their own theory about this
game, but the stats show West won this game at the free-throw line,
where it was 7-12, compared to East's 4-14.

East's best moment: This game was close throughout and both
teams played great defense. East got nine points from Sarah Tyler
and eight from Laura Kruse.

Statistical notes: Rikie Gregg had eight points for East. Manu had
three treys, and Gregg two for West. Tyler had a game-high 11
rebounds for East.

What we learned from this game: In Region 6 games so far, the
point differential has been about seven points, but there have been a
lot of close games. You have to win those.

Next: West returns home to play Cyprus.on Jan. 16. East plays host
to
Murray the same night.

Jan. 9 - Murray 37, West 29

Story of the game: Lyndi Miller had a season-high 11 points as
Murray bolted to a big first-quarter lead and downed West in a Region
6 game.

West's best moment: This was a defensive battle and it took time for
West to recover from a first-quarter deficit. Valencia Manu had 10
points for the Panthers.

Murray's best moment: The Spartans led 14-4 after the first quarter
and were never headed after that. Ame White and Sarah Baron added
nine points apiece.

Statistical notes: West was 5-7 from the free-throw line. Murray was
4-11. Amy Christensen had eight points for West. The Panthers
scored an anemic 29 points for the second straight game.

What we learned from this game: The Panthers have dropped two
straight and the offense - or lack of it - has been the big factor. On the
other hand, the defense has been great.

Next: West travels to play rival East on Jan. 13. Murray plays host to
Highland the same night.

Jan. 6 - Cottonwood 40, West 29

Story of the game: Erika Nash had 12 points and Fehi Fakailoatonga
had 11 as Cottonwood broke out early this time and raced to a
comfortable win over West in a Region 6 game.

West's best moment: The Panthers only scored 10 points in the first
half, but Valencia Manu helped the get offense moving better after
that. The deficit, however, was just too large

Cottonwood's best moment: Unlike the last game, the Colts broke
out early, scoring against West's zone defense and claimed an 11-2
lead. That was enough because they played pretty evenly after that.

Statistical notes: West had four three-pointers as Manu and Rikie
Gregg each had two. West shot just two free throws, and made one.
Cottonwood's defense held to West to a season-low point total.

What we learned from this game: Like their season so far, West
can't quite get the win it needs to turn the corner. The loss dropped
the Panthers to 1-1 in region.

Next: West travels to Murray on Jan. 9. Cottonwood returns home to
play
East.

Jan. 2 - West 37, Granger 31

Story of the game: Amy Christensen scored 11 points and West took
advantage of Granger's poor free-throw shooting, especially in the
fourth quarter, to earn a win in both team's Region 6 opener.

West's best moment: The Panthers took the lead for good in the
second quarter in this defensive-minded game. Valencia Manu
backed up Christensen with eight points.

Granger's best moment: The Lancers made a nice rally in the fourth
quarter and attacked the basket. They hit only 2-13 free throws in the
fourth quarter and 8-25 for the game.

Statistical notes: Martha Haiola and Vahine Tuigamala scored 10
points each for Granger. West was 8-14 from the free-throw line.

What we learned from this game: This was a good defensive battle,
like a lot of Region 6 games will be. West was fortunate because of
Granger's free-throw ills on its own floor.

Next: West returns home and will play Cottonwood Jan. 6. Granger
takes on
East at home the same night.

Dec. 16 - Judge Memorial 57, West 40

Story of the game: Mikelle Mancini scored 19 points and Tina
Fakahafua had 15 points and 11 rebounds as Judge pulled away
from West in the second quarter and won its fifth straight game.

West's best moment: The Panthers staged a minor rally in the fourth
quarter, but it was too little, too late. Destynee Rios had nine points -
all on three-point baskets.

Judge Memorial's best moment: Judge led just 14-10 after the first
quarter, but pulled away to take a 32-16 advantage at halftime.
Mancini and Alison Brann hit two three-pointers each and Judge also
shot well from the free-throw line.

Statistical notes: West was 1-8 from the free-throw line. Nine players
scored for the Panthers, however. This was Fakahafua's best game
of the season.

What we learned from this game: West has had an inconsistent
preseason, and it shows in its 3-3 record. Right now, West is not
likely a state tournament team, but let's see what happens in region.

Next: West is done until Jan. 2, when it opens Region 6 play at
Granger. Judge travels to Lehi Dec. 19.

30-20 at halftime. The second half was pretty even. West had a
season-high eight three-point baskets in this game.

which dropped to 2-4 on the season.

Statistical notes: Rios and Rikie Gregg had three treys each for
West. The Panthers were 10-18 from the free-throw line, while Box

victory, and first over a 4A team.

goes to Morgan Dec. 11.

Dec. 4 - West 39, Hunter 31

Story of the game: Valencia Manu scored 13 points and West used
its three-point shooting to turn back Hunter in a non-region game.

West's best moment: Manu had three treys for West, and the team
had five overall. West's defense played well, holding Hunter to just
eight first-half points. After giving up 87 points to Sky View two nights
ag, that had to feel good.

Hunter's best moment: The Wolverines had trouble scoring. They
trailed 30-16 entering the final quarter before putting together a nice
rally. Uma Bloomfield had a season-high 12 points.

Statistical notes: Rikie Gregg and Destynee Rios had seven points
apiece for West. Latiesha Webster had six points for Hunter. West
was 4-7 from the free-throw line, compared to 10-22 for Hunter.

What we learned from this game: This was a good win after such a
bad loss to Sky View. West played great defense and that may key its
success this season.

Next: West plays at Box Elder Dec. 9. Hunter travels to Cyprus for a
Dec. 11 contest.

Story of the game: Dani Egbert scored 17 points and Melissa
Hansen had 16 as Sky View rolled to a big lead early and whipped

play decently in the fourth quarter. Amy Christensen was West's top
scorer with 12 points.

Sky View's best moment: The Bobcats led 15-8 after one quarter
and 41-12 at halftime. Amy Andrus had 15 points for the Bobcats and
was one of 13 players that scored.

Statistical notes: Sky View's 87 points will likely be a season high.
West had 20 points in the first three quarter (total), and 16 in the final
period.

What we learned from this game: Sky View is the defending 4A
champion and is a contender to win it again.

Next: West travels to play Hunter Dec. 4. Sky View returns home to
play in its own tournament Dec. 5-6.

Nov. 26 - West 55, Copper Hills 38

Story of the game: Ashley Quarles scored 16 points and Amy
Christensen had 15 as West ran away from Copper Hills with a big
third quarter and claimed its first win of the season.

West's best moment: The Panthers had a good first quarter, then
dominated most of the second half. Rikie Gregg added 11 points for
West.

Copper Hills' best moment: The Grizzlies made a nice rally in the
second quarter. Trailing 15-7, they outscored West 16-12 to keep the
game exciting at halftime.

Statistical notes: Brittany Hackworth and Kim Bohne had 12 points
apiece for Copper Hills. The Grizzlies were held to just 15
second-half points. Gregg was West's outside threat with three treys.

What we learned from this game: The lack of offense was again a
problem for Copper Hills, but the team played far better than the
opener.

Next: Copper Hills plays Hillcrest at home Dec. 4. West travels to
powerful Sky View Dec. 2.

Nov. 25 - Woods Cross 57, West 27

Story of the game: Xochian Harry scored 13 points and Nikki
Fernandes had 10 as Woods Cross got a big lead early and whipped
West in the season opener for both teams.

West's best moment: This game was never in doubt. West scored
10 points in the first half, but got its offense going a little more in the
second half when it scored 17.

Woods Cross' best moment: It was 12-5 after the first quarter and
30-10 at halftime. Fernandes had a couple of three-pointers for the
Wildcats.

Statistical notes: West was only 9 of 27 from the free-throw line - and
this was its own gym. Amy Christensen had four points and that led
the team in scoring.

What we learned from this game: This was West's opener, and it
had to be disheartening. If you score 27 points, you're not going to
beat too many teams.

Next: West goes to Copper Hills tonight (Nov. 26). Woods Cross
plays host to Mountain View Dec. 3.
